Don't. Just don't.

There’s something that bothers me at least twice every year: seeing wishes of “happy” Parkinson’s Awareness Month (April) and “happy” International Day of People with Disabilities (Dec 3). Instead of writing about why it bothers me, here are some ideas about what to do instead.

Focus on Action: Shift focus from awareness to tangible action, such as improving accessibility, advocating for policy change, and ensuring equal opportunity in employment.

Avoid Inspiration Porn: Stella Young said it better.

Listen to Lived Experience: Center the day on the voices, stories, and expertise of people living with [insert chronic condition here].

Support Rights: Recognize that disability rights are human rights and that what we need is justice.

And NEVER EVER leave your car in the spots that are reserved for people with disabilities - unless you have one, that is.
